Why We Exist
An Unfortunate Reality
Spanning 30 years as a corporate trainer and coach; I’ve observed, worked alongside of, or have been a student of hundreds of trainers across various industries, projects, and companies. I’ve repeatedly witnessed a serious problem…blatantly ineffective training. This has bothered me for years.
From my vantage point…
Too many individuals are being short-changed when it comes to the training they receive
Too many individuals are not being given an equal opportunity to succeed
These individuals are not aware of what they’re not getting
Organizations are not receiving a true return on their investment
Many organizations are not aware of what they’re not getting
I can back up this shocking pronouncement with example after example.
And when performance issues arise,
many wonder why?
Why?
There are too many (50% in my estimation, at
best) trainers who are either…
Under-qualified
Unqualified
Unprepared
Unfocused
Unclear
Inaccurate
Incompetent
Unskilled
Inept
Overly impressed with their eloquence and intellect
Seduced by the sound of their own voice
Uncaring
It might simply be the trainer is having an off day
…or combinations thereof
Important Note: The vast majority of trainers are very good, very nice people. Character has nothing to do with their ineffectiveness
Unacceptable Outcomes:
Individuals might receive effective training…they might not (50 / 50 odds, at best)
Many projects are considered successful when in reality, that isn’t the case
Too many sessions considered successful were led by inept trainers delivering ineffective training
Too many inept trainers are receiving good or even excellent evaluations for a variety of reasons (charismatic, articulate, good-looking, funny, nice, warm and fuzzy, etc.) having nothing to do with effectiveness
Ineffective training is leading to ineffective OTJ performance
Too many false impressions of success
Why does this problem exist?:
Too many trainers are not trained how to train
Trainers are not sure what to train
Many in the role of trainer are not trainers at all (many are SME’s thrust into the role of trainer)
SME’s with many other primary job functions don’t focus on their training acumen
Many feel there is nothing in it for them
Trainers are not effectively coached on an on-going basis
Trainers are not coached at all
Trainers are not being held accountable
Learning and Development ceases after training
The Implications:
Individual performance suffers
Livelihoods are negatively affected
Individual stress increases
Morale nose-dives
Organizational success is affected
Organization’s customers suffer
Management stress amplifies
An organizations bottom-line suffers
The
problem and the implications are unacceptable
OTJ
Performance effectiveness cannot be left to chance
Maximum Positive Impact can
contribute to resolving the problem
and its resultant implications
